The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse in Port Hope on Michigan’s Thumb is one of a handful of lighthouses in the state where you can stay onsite. The first lighthouse there was built in 1848 from lake stone but was demolished in 1857, when the lighthouse that stands today was built with a brick tower. Volunteers pay $150 each to the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse and Maritime Museum to stay a week in the former assistant lighthouse keeper’s property. Snowy trail walks, sprinkle donuts, building the best burger ever, hot chocolate at a cat café, swimming at the hotel, and ending the day with really good pasta.
